De Rust News - Bill and Christina Martin Proudly Wearing Their Awards.

Prestigious President’s Award for the Chaine des Rotisseurs.

At a special luncheon on Sunday 26th November 2011 held in Knysna, Bill and Christina Martin received the President’s Award for the Chaine des Rotisseurs.

I am not sure of all the details and, being the humble people they are, Bill and Christina are not saying anything. I managed to get the photo from their daughter Candy. But, I believe that it was for long and faithful service to the Chaine. If and when I receive more info I will certainly post it.

Whatever it was for we are proud as the people of De Rust to have them as part of our little community.

De Rust Farmers Market – Saturday 3rd March

We are now going into our sixth month with our Farmers Market in De Rust. The gardens at Housemartin Guest Lodge and The Plough Restaurant have proved to be an idyllic venue.

Yep, the next De Rust Farmers Market will take place on Saturday 3rd March.

The venue is as always the gardens of the Housemartin Guest Lodge and The Plough Restaurant in Schoeman Street, De Rust.

The market is from 08:00 until around 13:00. Refreshments are available from the Plough Restaurant and include coffee, tea, cold drinks, pizza, breakfast and light snacks like toasted sandwiches etc.

Come and join us for a relaxing morning; meet some of our local yokels and of course stock up on fresh farm produce and gifts.

Should you want to bring goodies to sell, there is no charge for a table and you keep all the profits. Great deal! Candy is not doing it for the money but for the community and the vendors.

Looks like the weather man is also going to be kind to us… if he gets it right :-)

The De Rust Farmers Market is kicking off 2012 with what promises to be another great selection of products. We are branching out into other products as well. Many people ask for arts and crafts and so we are going to oblige and give them what they want.

From 08:00 on Saturday 4th February there will be fresh farm produce, Bill Martin’s absolutely divine seed loaf (for which he has won an international award), Trix Peel will be there with her hand knitted winter goodies (jerseys, scarves, beanies and bed socks, mittens). Kathryn will be manning her stall selling delicious sauces: Avocado and Basil Salad dressing, Portuguese Peri Peri, Garlic relish and the all-time favourite – Onion Marmalade.

Christina Martin’s TROPICAL GLAZED BAKED HAM – With Love from De Rust

1 Gammon                                                                               water

2 carrots, sliced                                                                        2 tins pineapple rings, large

2 leeks, sliced                                                                           red and green glacé cherries, washed

2 stalks celery with leaves                                                       62 ml Coleman’s dry mustard

1 onion, sliced                                                                          250 ml brown sugar

4 sprigs parsley                                                                        250 ml reserved pineapple juice

2 bay leaves                                                                             125 ml apricot jam

freshly ground black pepper                                                    83 ml brown vinegar

2 bottles lager                                                                          cloves

Cut two large pieces of tin foils, big enough to wrap the ham well. Place them in the shape of a cross on a standard oven-roasting pan. Put half the sliced vegetables on the foil and place the ham on top. Cover the ham with the balance of the vegetables and herbs. Pour over the beer and sprinkle with pepper. Wrap the ham well, sealing the edges, so that the beer does not run out. Pour 3cm water around the ham and bake for 30 minutes per kilogram at 180-190o C. When the outer skin starts to crack open, the ham is cooked.

Remove from the oven and discard the skin and vegetables. Decorate the fat with pineapple rings, cherries and cloves. Make the glaze by reducing the pineapple juice by half, then adding the mustard, brown sugar, apricot jam and vinegar. Boil until you have a medium to thick glaze.  Paint the ham all over with the glaze and bake at 200o C for 30 – 40 minutes, or until glaze is gently brown.

This ham is good served either hot or cold.

Enjoy.

FARMERS MARKET – DE RUST – Saturday 1st October

What a great beginning to our Farmers Market in De Rust.

We had a good turnout of locals with a wide variety of produce for sale. The many people who came were spoiled for choice and the result… satisfied buyers and sellers. A real win win situation. The buyers also included a group of overseas tourists who had spent the night in the luxurious accommodation at Housemartin Guest Lodge.

The market even drew people from our neighbouring towns and from the coast. It was a good start to what is going to become a popular monthly Farmers Market in De Rust.

If you would like to take part and bring your produce to the market then please contact me for details at the numbers below.

We look forward to seeing you at our next Farmers Market on the 5th November.

Kindest regards,

Candy.
